Vinings Georgia
Vinings, GA has a history that reaches back to the end of the last Ice Age, with evidence suggesting the area was traveled by nomads thousands of years ago. The region was inhabited during the Woodland and Mississippian eras, up until the mid-1500s when European explorers brought diseases that decimated the native populations. Survivors eventually formed the Creek and Cherokee groups. The 1800s brought European settlers, and by the mid-century, all Native Americans had been driven out of Georgia. Hardy Pace, one of the settlers, won land through lotteries and amassed thousands of acres in the area. He established Pace’s Ferry, a grist mill, an inn and tavern, and farms, with the area becoming a construction hub for the Western & Atlantic Railroad in 1839. The name “Vinings” came from William H. Vining, an engineer responsible for constructing a railroad bridge in the area. The community grew around what became known as Vining’s Station.
During the post-Civil War Reconstruction era, Vinings became a popular destination for Atlantans seeking leisure outside the city, thanks to a pavilion built by the Western & Atlantic Railroad in 1874. This pavilion hosted social events and was moved in 1996 to preserve its history.
